Paringa is owned by David Hickinbotham, whose Clarendon vineyard in McLaren Vale supplies grapes for some ofAustralia’s most famous wines, including Penfolds Grange. The Paringa vineyard is set on 1,700 acres of primeRiverland property about 150 miles northeast of Adelaide in South Australia on a sub-surface of limestone beneathsandy loam topsoil. Rainfall in the region is quite low, but the Paringa property abuts the historic Murray River sothere is a convenient source of water for the vineyard’s drip irrigation system. Yields are maintained atapproximately 5 to 6 tons per acre and careful attention is paid to canopy management and irrigation technique.David Hickinbotham and winemaker John Gledhill agree that the quality of the wine improves with lower yields andhave made the decision to go for quality over quantity. In 2008, unrelenting drought limited winter rains andthreatened water availability. The resultant yield reductions ensured optimum maturity of flavor, aroma and tanninand an Australian record heat wave amplified the richness and intensity.. Saturated deep magenta red.
